Calicut : NIT Calicut issued circular banning public display of affection on its campus. The document dated Wednesday says romantic displays are private affairs and one that’s disturbing to onlookers and also against the University policy.
The circular signed by Dean of Student Welfare dept is versatile in content i.e. capable of being interpreted to one’s convenience. In any case, the circular warns of strict disciplinary action against those violating the order.
The Content
(1) Display of romance in public view causes discomfort and shame to onlookers. The result would be conflict and tense environment in campus.
(2) Open show of affection can distract others from academic focus and in turn impact their studies. The campus that ensures safety and wellbeing of students and employees has strict policies in place, violation of which could invoke strict disciplinary action, the circular read.
The student community reacted saying the circular is indicative of moral policing mindset. Last August, the authorities threatened to cut down hostel hours in the name of ‘romance’ issue.
