Thiruvananthapuram : Former Chief Minister and senior Congress .leader Oomen Chandy passed away after prolonged battle with cancer. The end came this morning 4:25 amat the hospital. He was 79.
Oomen Chandy was born on 31 Oct, 1943 to KO Chandy and Baby Chandy in Puthupally’s Vallakaal. During his student days Oomen was president of All Kerala Banlajanasakhy and went on to become a KSU activist. Oomen Chandy’s first election into Kerala Legislative Assembly came in 1970 after winning from Puthupally constituency. He retained that constituency straight up to 2021.
Oomen Chandy was Chief Minister of Kerala twice. He also served as leader of the Opposition.
Oomen Chandy featured fourth in the position for longest tenure as Chief Minister, the order being EK Nayanar(4,009 days), K Karunakaran(3246 days), C Achutha Menon(2640) and Oomen Chandy(2459).
Oomen Chandy is survived by wife Mariamma (former Canara Bank officer); Children : Chandy Oomen, Achu Oomen and Mariam Oomen.
