Thrissur: A shutter of Parambikulam dam faulted resulting in excess flow into Peringalkuthu. Of the 3 open shutters, one raised itself higher causing 20000 cusecs of additional waterflow into Peringalkuth. With water rising unexpectedly, authorities issued high alert for residents in Chalakudy region.
The shutter sandwiched between the two of the three, is the one with technical snag.
Water is expected to rise from the one-and-half metre earlier level to about four meters. Authorities closed all river embankments as precautionary measure. Even so, the authorities assured there was no cause for panic or vigil.
What happened? : Early this morning, the authrites raised all three shutters for routine regulation of the dam waters.The estimate was a release of 600 cusecs. However, the mid-shutter stuck up higher than it was gauged to resulting in unexpected volume of outflow and swelling Chalakudy river up to 3 meters high, nearing 4.5 meters now.
