Batheri: “It is pension from government that keeps life going. And, one thing is certain.. it will not be disruped if this government continues”. These words come Amina, daughter of 87-year-old Khadiumma living in ward for of Nenmani panchayat. Khadhija receives old-age pension while Amina is beneficiary to widow pension. They have pension arriving at their doorstep each month with no arrears anytime. After marriage of her daughter, Amina and mother are the only two members left at home.
Amina is unable to work under employment guarantee scheme owing to her chronic back ache. The household expenses are now met with Rs 3000 received in pensions. For medical needs, the government hospital provides free treatment and medicines.
Added to this are free ration kits the govt provide in the pandemic each month. This govt is one that helps people anticipating their needs, said the two women. Amina has her younger sister Subaida living next door, where the 72-year-old mother-in-law Pathumma shared identical opinion. Pathumma currently awaits her pension after applying for it last month.
