Pannur : CPI(M) Pannur Area Committee member, PK Kunjananthan, a victim of political conspiracy who underwent jail sentencing, passed away last night. The end came a 9.25 pm Thursday at Trivandrum Medical College. The Left veteran was undergoing treatment for a stomach ailment he had developed in prison, while serving sentence in TP Chandrashekaran case.
The funeral was held today noon 1 pm at PK Kunjananthan ‘s home premises in Pannur. The body that reached Pannur home Friday morning 9 am, was kept at CPI(M) Area Committee office up to 11 am and later at Paradu town for public homage.
PK Kunjananthan entered active politics after helming protests at Paradu town against countrywide emergency that lasted nearly two years. He joined CPI(M) in 1970 and served as Local Committee Secretary for 15 years at Kanothuparambu. PK Kunjananthan also served at party’s Farm Workers Union and Kannur District Committee.
In January of 2014, a trial court convicted him with life sentence in TP Chandrashekaran case. The appeal against conviction is pending before the High Court.
PK Kunjananthan was born in 1948 to Late Shri Kannan Nair from Kelothontevida and Smt Kanjkattil Kanjanamma. After schooling at Kanankode UP School, he joined CPI(M) on footsteps of his maternal uncle Gopalkrishnan Master. Though Kunjananthan left for Bengaluru for a brief period for job purposes, he returned to hometown shortly before national emergency.
A staunch communist, PK Kunjananthan was always on the forefront to protect party establishment from destabilizing forces.
