Thiruvananthapuram: Noted poet Vishnu Narayanan Namboothiri has passed away aged 81. He has been ailing for some time now and the end came at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram. The poet is a widely known literary scholar, orator and cultural philosopher.
Born on 2 June, 1939 in Iringal, Thiruvalla Nambootiri has worked as college lecturer in Kozhikode, Kollam, Pattambi, Ernakulam, Tripunithura, Chitoor , Thiruvananthapuram, Government Brnan College and Thalassery.
He worked in the English departments of various government colleges and retired from Thiruvananthapuram University College as head of the department. Having served at Kerala Language Institute, Kerala Sahithya Committee, Environment Protection Committee, Kerala Kalamandalam, Kerala Sahithya Academy, Vishnu Namboothiri became member of Millennium Confederation in 1997
Awards conferred include: Prashasthi Puraskaram , Puraskaram, Kendra Sahitya Academy Award, Kerala Sathitya Academy Award, Kerala Sahitya Academy Membership, Wayalar Puraskaram, Vallathol Puraskaram and Odkuzhal Award. Famous works comprise: Swathendrathe kurichu oru geetham, Pranaya geethangal, Bhumi geethangal, India ennu vikaram, Mukham Evide, Aparjit, Aranyakum, Ujjayinil Raapakulukal, Charulatha, etc.
After retiring, Vishnu Namboothiri has also served as head priest at Thiruvallam Temple.
