Kannur : Famous Mappilapattu singer Peer Mohamed has passed away aged 75. The singer was under treatment for age-related ailments and the end came at his Muluzhipilangad residence in Kannur this morning. Mohamed penned several hit mappila songs and played pivotal role in endearing mapila songs to wide public.
Evergreen songs like Kafmalakanda Poonkaatte and Ottakangal vari vari ayee were composed, tuned and sung by Peer. Several lines routinely hummed in households to this day were penned by Peer. Crisp pronunciation of lyrics and clear vocal tone marked Peer’s singing.
Peer Mohamed was born in Thenkasi village of Surainda in Tamil Nadu. His mother was Thenkasi native Balkesaan and father, Thallassery native Aziz Ahmed. The family migrated to Thalassery when Peer was 4 years old. Peer has versed, lend music and sung over 4000 songs.
Peer did his schooling at Avam Madrasa UP School in Thayathangadi and at St. Joseph High School in Thalassery, Mubarak High School. He later graduated from Sir Syed College in Thaliparambu. Peer’s tryst with music began at age four, beginning with recital of poetry. He has conducted scores of mappila music shows and has shared stage with renowned mapillapattu artiste VM Kutty.
