Thiruvananthapuram The Railways should apply scientific waste management methods for waste disposal on daily basis from the 130 meter tunnel running adjacent to Thampanoor Railway Station, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, speaking at the meeting convened to address garbage crisis in Amayizhinchan canal. Waste disposal at the canal is important to prevent infectious diseases, said CM.
The meeting suggested for the Railway Engineering division to conduct a weekly inspection that ensures waste collected from trains is disposed in scientific manner. It was also decided at the meeting to have the Irrigation Dept repair the fencings on both sides of the canal and install fresh fencing along 2000 meters on the canal embankment.
The Corporation will set up two trash booms near the bridge situated in the mid part of Rajaji Nagar and another at where the Rajaji settlement ends. Also, works will be sped up at site identified for Scientific Waste Disposal Project. inside Rajaji Nagar. The Major Irrigation Dept will install the metal meshes. The Fire & Rescue will provide necessary training and safety gear for those engaged in waste management activities.
Existing dump units at Rajaji Nagar will be rendered functional and surplus waste handed over to authorised agencies. Mini MCF/Container MCF will be setup to collect inorganic waste.
To prevent dumping of liquid and solid wastes from service stations into creek at Amayizhanchan, KSRTC bus depot at Thampanoor will be instructed to set up its own effluent treatment plant and integrated waste management system.
The meeting also decided to make arrangements to prevent KWA’s overflow of water from pumping stations at Plamoodu, Cosmo Hospital, Kannamoola and Patoor. It was also decided to set up sewage treatment plat at the zoo and system for solid waste management there.
Various measures like setting up of watershed committees, watershed maintenance overseen by children etc are being planned toward protection and maintenance of various water bodies. Another of the decisions was to ensure smooth discharge of water into the sea.
The meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was attended by Ministers of Local Self-Government, Public Works, Labour, Food, Sports-Railway, Health and Water Resources, concerned MLAs and Thiruvananthapuram Mayor.
