Southerlies Retreat; October Rains Arriving; States Including Kerala To Witness Heavy Rainfall

Thiruvananthapuram : The South-west monsoons  completely retreated by Thursday countrywide and North-east rains are set to begin, informed the Indian Meteorological Dept(IMD).  States including Kerala will have heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorm. A severe low pressure is likely to build over Bay of Bengal and the Arabian sea, the IMD said.

The depression in Arabian Sea will intensify into severe depression by Saturday and move up northwestward and transform into a cyclonic storm. A cyclonic circulation is also predicted over Bay of Bengal.

 Regular monsoon i.e. from June to September was below average for most parts of the country. Of the 868.6  mm rainfall expected only 820 mm was received. In Kerala, monsoon  reduced to just 34 percent of the normal.  That was kind of made up when rains since 1st of October for three weeks rose to an additional 13 percent i.e. 219.6 mm.

Thiruvananthapuram secured highest of October rains - 125 percent of excess showers that stood at 374.1 mm followed by Pathanamthitta that got 73 percent excess while districts of Wayanad, Kasaragod, Thrissur and Idduki recorded lesser rains during this period.
