Thalassery : In a bizarre twist, the girl who fell victim to sexual exploits of catholic priest Robin Vakakumcherry as a minor, petitioned the apex court for consent to marry him. The survivor in her plea emphasised the decision as her own and one free from duress and urged court to facilitate her stay with her child together with his biological father. The case shall be heard by justices Vinit Sharan and Dinesh Maheswari. Robin Vadakumcherry convicted under POCSO by Thalasery court is currently undergoing a 60-year sentence of rigorous imprisonment.
The incident dates back to 2016 when Robin Vakakumchery served as priest at St. Sebastin’s Church in Neendunoki, Kottiyoor. There, he raped the minor girl and she later gave birth to his child.
When the incident became known and Vadakumchery was booked, he petitioned the High Court agreeing to marry the girl and look after their child - a proposition dismissed by High Court as outrageous. This complementary offer by the survivor herself, is an unusual twist. The case will come up fo hearing on Monday.
