Mangaluru : Sangh Parivar supporters in Karnataka turn up in saffron shawls and turbans in school, college premises, attempting to thwart hijab-wearing students coming there . Tensions have flared with both sides resisting one another and the govt announced 3-day closure of all high schools and colleges in state.
The High Court urged students and people to help sustain peace. The topic should not be allowed to assume emotional overtones, said Justice Krishnan Dixit during the hearing of a petition by Muslim students against state order banning hijab to educational institutions.
Sangh Parivar rampages gave given rise to widespread clashes. At a college in Shimoga, Sangh Parivar elements climbed up the flag post meant for national flag and hoisted saffron flag amid slogans of “Jai Sree Ram.”, even as authorities looked on. Several students, under the aegis of Sangh Parivar, arrived in schools wearing saffron turban and shawls. Then as they started to block hijab-clad students, tensions flared and Prohibition Order became issued in Shimoga soon after.
At first grade college in Dhavlnare district, police fired shots into the sky to disperse tense crowd and a further point, resorted to lathi-charge.
Tense atmosphere prevails at Mahatma Gandhi College in Uddip’s Kanthapuram and PU college. At PES college in Mandya, ABVP workers dressed in saffron shawl and turban advanced menacingly toward hijab-wearing students. Confrontations unfolded in Bahalkota as well.
The hijab-ban order came after PU Govt College For Women in Uddupi first prohibited its students to come to college wearing hijab.
