New Delhi : The Sikkim High Court on Friday consented for cross-examination of Mathrubhumi editors in connection with defamation case filed by lottery tycoon Santiago Martin. The ruling came in dismissal of Mathrubhumi petition urging quashing of trial and summons issued by Gangtok magistrate in that regard.
As per Supreme Court verdict, the publication is responsible for all news it releases, said SuprmeMartin’s lawyer Kishore Dutt.
In the ruling, the High Court also ordered involved editors to be personally present for cross-examination. Accused are : Mathrubhumi Management, the MD, Joint MD, Managing Editor and Joint Managing Editor.
In his petition, Santiago Martin said he was slandered by Mathrubhumi in its print and online editions that repeatedly dubbed him as “Lottery mafia don(ലോട്ടറി മാഫിയ തലവൻ).
The Mathrubhumi defamatory series came in reaction to then Finance Minister Thomas Isaac’s references to Martin.
