Thiruvananthapuram: In five years from now, coasts around Kerala will be fully protected and problems arising out of sea incursions permanently resolved, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the Assembly Tuesday morning. Coastal erosion is severe at at least 10  locations in the state and efforts are on to install tetrapods at these sites, said CM in reply to an adjournment motion moved by the Opposition.

Problems pertaining to sea coasts are longstanding. There will be serious interventions made to tackle them. There is no neglect toward Shankumugham. Any problem relating to the fisher folks is concern of the entire state, said CM.

Anxiety overhangs coasts from Chellanum to Fort Kochi, said Minister Krishnankutty on behalf of Minister for Water Resources. Cyclone Yaas that struck recently struck has left much destruction at coasts. Project for coastal areas will be worked out using KIIFB funds, the minister added. Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian also clarified that measures to protect coasts will commence once the rains get over. Problems faced by different coasts have to be studied individually, he said.

PC Vshnunath moved the adjournment motion for the Opposition, saying grave conditions exist in the coastal regions of the state. Traditional methods are inadequate to tackle these problem. Construction of seawalls or breakwaters will not help much, said Vishnunath seeking permission for passing the adjournment motion.

Speaker MB Rajesh refused consent for the motion after Chief Minister elaborated on the topic in his speech. The Opposition reacted to the refusal by leaving the Assembly.
