Setback For Sriram Venkitaraman; High Court Restores Manslaughter Charges In Killing Of KM Basheer

Kochi : The High Court on Friday restored culpability for IAS officer Sriram Venkitraman in his killing of  Mangalam journalist KM Basheer by crashing car onto bike in drunken driving.

Earlier, the Thiruvananthapuram First Class Additional Magistrate Court had dropped culpable homicide charges against Sriram following his plea to that effect.

 The restoration  of charges today came over government’s appeal seeking that Sriram be held culpable of homicide.

The Case: The case dates back to 3 August, 2019. Early at dawn that day, at 1 am, Sriram Venkitaraman,  was  drunk and driving Volkswagen  car belonging to his woman  friend Wafa Firoz - who was in the passenger seat at the time of crash. Speeding  on high gear along Kowdiar stretch, in Thiruvananthapuram, Sriram  hit Basheer’s bike in front of PSC office. Basheer suffered grievous injuries and died up on being brought to  Medical College.
