Thiruvananthapuram : The death of Class V student, Shehala Sherni, is profoundly saddening, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan adding that, it is a matter of grave concern that the child sustained snake-bite inside the classroom,

Referring to callousness of school authorities, Pinarayi said, it is  teachers who supposedly teach children, how to act in emergencies. Ironically, in Shehala’s case, the children at school urged teachers to rush her to hospital, but in vain.

Govt will ensure stringent action against those found guilty of neglect, said the minister.

The death is tragic, said CM while tweeting his condolences to the bereaved family.

On 20 Nov, Shehala was bitten by a snake holed up under her bench. The school authorities instead of rushing her for medical attention, called upon her father to do the needful. The father, a lawyer, who reached  the place, found Shehala seated on the chair with blood oozing from the bite.

He rushed her to Taluk hospital, where they did blood tests and waited 20 minutes for results, only to deny anti-venom dosage, citing its complications. The child, whose vitals were in distress by then,  began to vomit and have breathing difficulties. The Taluk advised rushing the critical child to the two-hour away medical college. Shehala died almost soon after.
