Colombo : Srilanka  Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe has announced resignation to make room for the  all-party government to come to power.

The Prime Minister’s office said Wickremesinghe will remain in office just long enough to allow the new government to take charge.

At the all-party meeting held earlier in the day, Wickremesinghe said he decided to step down considering that  this week will see  island-wide fuel distribution restored,  the World Food Programme Director’s visit to the country and debt sustainability report for IMF almost ready.

The resignation, Wickremesinghe said, is in acknowledgment of the Opposition view that will lend greater safety for the citizens.

Meanwhile, the President Gotabaya Rajapaksha has vanished without trace, with no clues to what happened after he left his residence on Friday, 8 July - just ahead of today’s protest that so thousands of anti-government protesters breached his residence and set the house on fire.
