Kannur : 110 CPI(M) workers were acquitted in the case of stone pelting at former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's car. The Kannur Assistant Sessions Judge Rajeevan Vachal convicted three in the case, namely - Deepak Chaladan. COT Naseer and Biju Parampath. Deepak Chaladan was sentenced to five years in prison and a fine of Rs 10,000. Naseer and Biju received 2 years each.
The case relates to incident that happened on 27 October, 2013. Oomen Chandy had arrived at Kannur Police Parade Ground to give away prizes for Sports Meet held there. A total of 114 persons were indicted in the case and charged with attempted assassination on the Chief Minister. Of these, 110 people stood trial.
DySP Sudarshan had headed the investigations. In the chargesheet filed by him, CPI(M) DYFI workers including TV Rajesh, KV Sumesh, C Krishnan, KK Narayanan, Binoy Kurian, OK Vinish, PK Sabarishkumar Biju Kandakai and P Prashobh , and 900 other identifiable suspects were named as accused. The court took witness accounts from 258 including Oomen Chandy, KC Joseph and T Siddiqued..299 documents were submitted in evidence. Kannrr Town SI Sanal Kumar had registered the case.
The case was highly sensationalised and the verdict crumbled its sham. Charges of conspiracy and assassination attempt were proved to be false. Evidences laid pointed only to stone-pelting and destruction of public property. Advocates BP Saseendran, Vinod Kumar Chambolan, KV Manojkumar and P Reshma appeared for the accused.
