Swapna Charged Under UAPA; Bail Plea Not Maintainable, Centre Tells High Court

Kochi : The central govt in its report to Kerala High Court on Friday informed that  NIA has booked Swapna -  one of the key accused in gold smuggling case - under UAPA.  

The report further said Sandeep, Swapna are Sarith are prime suspects in the gold smuggled via diplomatic channel that was subsequently intercepted at cargo terminal of Thiruvananthapuram airport on 5th this month. Preliminary investigations into the case is currently underway. Swapna made attempts to have the contraband cleared through the terminal after which, she switched her cell phone off  Officials tried to serve her summons, however she has vanished and here whereabouts are not known. For a clearer picture on Swapna’s role, it is necessary to bring her to questioning, the centre told the court.  

Following the development, the High Court adjourned hearing on Swapna’s bail plea to Tuesday. 

NIA registered its case early this morning. According to NIA Swapna’s, whose role in the present case is dubious, also appears involved in other questionable deals. She has been booked under sec 16,17, of UAPA.  

Swapna’s bail application will not be maintainable given that, charges imply crime against the country, the centre told HC. Incidentally, Swapna has requested her own copy of NIA’s report on their preliminary findings.
