Thiruvananthapuram : The already heavy rains have further intensified across State. Authorities issued Orange Alert for four districts - Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha .
Low-lying areas inside city and outskirts are submerged. More than 40 houses at Kazhakootam are inundated. In Venjaramoodu, two houses, including one under construction, collapsed in the rains. At Vamanapuram, Thettiyar river has breached embankments. Railway tracks in Kochuveli is flooded . Control rooms have been opened at five places in the district to coordinate relief efforts.
Rains have been exceptionally high compared to recent times, the reason why flooding has occurred, said Minister K Rajan, adding that, 17 relief camps have been opened. Several houses in Attingal, Mangalapuram and Surinamkulam and Adnoorkonam are flooded and people evacuated from these areas.
Rains yesterday and today inundated large parts of Thiruvananthapuram and many residents woke up to flooding inside their homes. Landslides were reported from Thrissure on Malakappara road following which goods vehicles came to be restricted in the stretch. A house caught fire in Kozhikode’s Kandivatukal last night after thunder struck. Two were injured from the lightning.
Ernakulam too witnessed heavy water-logging with vegetable market and roads in Maradu heavily flooded. Traffic in this areas has ground to a halt.
