New Delhi : Just ten months into his tenure of helming the  Madras High court,   Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee, who criticised the central govt over lax Covid mitigation, has been transferred to Meghalaya.

CJ Banerjee had criticised the centre’s vaccine policy and oxygen shortage crisis caused last year. The Chief Justice also spelt scathing criticism for the surveillance system conceptualised by the centre in 2021 to rein in media and the  IT law. The judge also incurred Centre’s ire for stating that BJP misused Aadhaar data during election days. The current transfer comes at end of such frictious instances of choosing to be fair.

Around 200 lawyers at the Madras High Court are marking protest against the abrupt transfer.

The Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held 16th September recommended CJ Banerjee’s transfer to Meghalaya, followed by president’s consent on 9 November. Former Chief Justice of  Madras High Court,  Justice Vijay Kamlesh Tahilremani, too was transferred to Meghalaya. At the time, the CJ, in protest, resigned from his post soon after the transfer became  announced.
