LONDON : Unlawful Activities Preventive Amendment (UAPA) is an encroachment by the Centre into the powers of the State, CPI(M) General Secretary, Sitaram Yechury said.
Law and order issues fall within purview of the State government, he added.
BJP's latest amendment to the Act allows the Centre to notify an individual as terrorist. UAPA facilitates Centre to override State's powers and take an individual into custody, accusing him of terrorism, the leader said.
CPI(M) had vehemently opposed UAPA when it was first tabled in the parliament. The Act violates a citizen's fundamental rights and CPI(M)M views this as unacceptable, said Yechury.
Referring to recent UAPA arrest of two youths, Yechury said, all efforts are being made to withdraw UAPA charges in the case.
The anti-govt propaganda is politically motivated to destabilize Left governance there, he added.
