Thiruvananthapuram : A nationwide  survey puts unemployment rates in Kerala at lowest in the country. The study highlights Kerala as having successfully upped its employment rate, creating more jobs despite crises. The survey was conducted out by Centre For Monitoring Indian Economy(CMIE).  CMIE  has published both monthly and yearly statistics on its official website. The charts place Kerala above BJP and Congress-ruled states in terms of  lower levels of unemployment.

Unemployment rates countrywide figures at 6.5% while it is 5.5 percent in Kerala and national figure during lockdown stayed above 20% while it was only 17% for Kerala. The charts also point to a steep decline of unemployment rates in Kerala in the past 5 months.

In Kerala, much of the jobs were created by state government and  a majority of which was done by  filling vacancies in public sector units. Unemployment rate in the state stood at 12% when LDF government came to power in 2016 while national rate at that time figured at 9 percent. In four years, the government has been able to bring that unemployment  level to figures to less than half. And, it achieved that feat amid massive natural disasters,  deadly pandemic, demonetisation, GST launch etc

One-and-half lakh jobs were rendered via PSC alone. Another half-lakh people procured jobs through the state’s employment exchange. As trend reversed in Public Sector Units to profits from earlier losses, it provided scores of direct and indirect jobs for the people and  IT sector took a major leap after about 50,000 square feet was built upon for expansion. Start-up enterprises that numbered to just 300 in 2016 has touched 3900 now. The numbers of small scale businesses have doubled over  past 5 years. When these figures compare to levels during Oomen Chandy tenure, it points to unparalleled efforts by current government toward the phenomenal escalation in the state’s  employment rates.
