Kottayam : Renowned snake handler, Vava Suresh, hospitalised in critical condition from cobra bite, has begun to breathe independently and is now detached from ventilator. There is also improvement in brain activity, said hospital sources.

However, Vava will continue to remain in the ICU for next 48 hours,  as patients removed from venting support sometimes require  assistance over again, in some cases.

The near-fatal incident took place this Monday when Vava Suresh was attending a snake-rescue call in Kottayam’s Kurchi. While maneuvering the snake into the gunny bag, it inflicted a quick bite to Vava’s right thigh. After looking up his wound, Vava caught the snake again and guided it into the bag, meant to ferry the reptile  into deep forest.  Soon after packing the snake, Vava slumped unconscious.

With 250 venomous bites and anti-venom shots, Vava’s liver condition was tricky making conventional treatment extremely difficult. A special team of experts was constituted to oversee his medical care. . And the government ensured the best possible  treatment to the passionate snake lover who is a household name across  Kerala and popular countrywide.
