Thiruvananthapuram :Congress workers involved in the Venjaramoodu double murders get life term, rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 60,000 in a separate case, where they killed a youth in the neighbourhood back in 2008.
They were found guilty of killing 23-year old Sajeev, resident of Puthanveetil in Manikal Edathara’s Penvumkuhzi. Additional District Judge, J Danny, ruled life imprisonment for three men found guilty in the case - Madpuram native Unni alias Biju, Sanal alias Sanal Singh and Appu Mahesh alias Mahesh.
Unni and Sanal, who are local Congress leaders, are 1st and 2nd accused respectively in murder of Haq Muhammad and Mithilraj.
In Sajeev murder, all three men have been sentenced to life imprisonment and Rs 50, 000 in fine each. There is an additional 7-year sentence and Rs 15000 fine for murder attempt on Sajeev’s father and one-year imprisonment and Rs 1000 in fine for attacking Sajeev’s brother. The cumulative fines amount to 1,98,000 rupees. If the culprits fail to pay fine, they would serve an additional one year in jail.
The culprits had killed their close friend Sajeev on 13 January 2008 smashing his head. The assailants had argued with Sajeev’s brother over a local incident. Enraged, they later arrived at his house with deadly weapons and Sajeev who sustained gruesome injuries died the next day. Sajeev’s father Sasi and brother Anuj too sustained injuries in the incident.
Adv T Geenakumari appeared for prosecution in the case. There are 9 culprits arraigned in the Venjaramoodu double murder, including Unni and Sanal. The accused are currently in remand following police chargesheet against them. In the wake of today’s sentencing, Sanal and Unni would face Venjaramoodu trial while still in prison.
