Thiruvananthapuram: The police on Wednesday served in court the chargesheet against nine Congress workers for twin murders of Venjaramoodu. The chargesheet put political vengeance as motive behind the slayings, with note that investigation into conspiracy was still ongoing. Persons accused of DYFI workers Haq Mohammad and Mithiraj’s murders are : Unni Sajeev, Sanal, Ansar, Shajith, Najeeb, Ajith, Sathi and Preeja.
Today, 80 days after investigations began, Attingal DySP A.Y. Suresh submitted the chargesheet in Nedumangad court. All accused currently remain in remand.
On Onam eve of 30th August this year, armed assailants arrived on bike and murdered the DYFI workers. While both were knifed and hacked multiple times, stab wounds caused to heart resulted in deaths of both Haq and Mithiraj. Those who participated directly in the slayings were Unni, Sajeev, Sanal and Ansar. Others are accomplices who either helped culprits flee the scene or provided hideout while on the run.. Mahila Congress member Preeja was arrested for helping the killers with the getaway vehicle - a Innova car she arranged after pledging some of her jewelry. Except for Unni, all culprits were local INTUC leaders. Among them, Unni and Sajeev have been previously charged for armed attack on DYFI workers.
The present chargesheet stated - The culprits nursed political grudge against Haq and Mithiraj. The commemoration day of campaign for last parliamentary election had escalated animosities. Following this, the culprits had twice attempted to kill the DYFI workers. Prior to the twin slayings, the culprits had made an attempt on Faisal’s life. Though, grievously injured in the incident, he had survived that attack miraculously. The culprits then hatched plan to do away with Haq and Mithiraj.
It is widely speculated that, the conspiracy for murders was plotted with full knowledge of certainsenior Congress leaders - the reason why police told the court they are not done as yet with the conspiracy dimension of the case.
