Kollam : Kiran Kumar - husband of the Vismaya found dead by hanging at his house in Porvazhy last year – has been convicted with 10 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 12.5 lakhs. He has been convicted under IPC 304 for dowry death and IPC 306 for abetting suicide. The cumulative punishment extends to 18 years in jail however, sentences are allowed to be served concurrently, hence the shrinkage to 10 years.
Vismaya’s mother who watched the updates on television is disappointed and said the punishment was lighter than hoped for and will appeal with a higher court.
Yesterday, the Kollam Additional Sessions court had found Kiran Kumar guilty of dowry torture and abetting suicide. Trial against Kiran Kumar was substantiated heavily by digital evidences in form of mobile contents, that effectively let Vismaya give testimony from beyond the grave of the tortures she had been suffering at hands of her husband in months prior before her death.
Backdrop : Vismaya (24) was found hanging from the bathroom window at her husband Kiran Kumar’s house in Poruvazhi close to Kollam’s Ambalathum on 21st of June, 2021 at 3.30 afternoon. A high-level police investigation and parallel departmental probe ensued that resulted in the state govt terminating Kiran Kumar from his job with Motor Vehicle dept nine months ago.
