Kochi: : Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will on Saturday dedicate to people the flyovers from over Vyttila and Kundanoor junctions, eventually easing the two most congested traffic points in the city. Vyttila flyover will inaugurate at 9 am and Kundanoor flyover at 11 am morning. The opening ceremony will be conducted via videoconferencing and will be presided by PWD Minister G Sudhakaran. Minister TM Thomas Isaac is guest of honor at the function.
The two flyovers brings permanent solution to bottleneck caused by traffic from National Highway 66 into the city and back at their respective junctions. Together costing Rs 152.81 crores, the two flyovers have been built on KIIFB funds and are lesser by Rs 15.02 crores from their original estimate. Comprising 3 lanes each in to and fro directions, the flyovers have been built on state-of-the-art technology. The state govt was also able to takeover construction works from the national authority and relieve public from the toll burden. The two flyovers projects, now completed by Pinarayi govt, had stayed blockaded during previous UDF govt tenure citing lack of funds.
With an average of over 10,000 vehicles crisscrossing Vyttila junction in an hour, commuters would remain stuck for hours during daytime for passage. Now Vyttila flyover becoming a reality, traffic eases not just for travelers from Aluva, Alappuzha toward Vyttila hub but also for those entering the city from Thripunitara side.
At Kundanoor - a conjunction of 3 national highways- the flyover will save substantial time for for travelers along national highways to the north and south directions and also for those traveling from Thripunitura to Kochi-Dhaushkode and Maradu-Kundanoor route.
The construction of Vyttila flyover was inaugurated in December 2017 by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. It came at an estimated cost of Rs 85.9 crores. The contract was fixed for Rs 78.36 crore saving a neat Rs 6.73 against the estimate. The length of flyover runs to 720 meters including the 4.40 metre approach road.
The construction of Kunadanoor flyover commenced on 31 May, 2018. The estimate obtained put the costs at Rs 74.45 while the contract was fixed at Rs 66.16 crore saving Rs 8.29 crores similarly. The Kundanoor flyover is 450 meters in length and runs to 731 meters with approach road included.
