Water Level Surges; Banasura Sagar, Peechi, and Kakayam Dams Opens

Thrissur/Kozhikode : Owing to water levels surging in reservoirs from heavy rainfall in catchment areas, authorities raised shutters of Banasura Sagar, Peechi and Kakayam dams.

At Banasura Sagar,, water levels reached 773.50  meters and the shutters are discharging 8.5 cubic meters of water per second currently. Gradually, 35 cubic meter of water will be let out through the spillway shutters in phases. The Collector issued advisory for caution to residents close by, the riverside settlements and others living in lower grounds with potential interface to the overflow from the river.

With no respite to rains in the catchment area, all four spillway shutters of the Peechi dam are to their maximum of 30 cm(12 inches) to discharge excess flow.  The district Collector here has instructed concerned departments for precautionary measures against flooding mishaps in the region. The excess water could swell Manali and Karavanur river, in the likelihood of which, the Collector advised residents there for high vigil. Children and growns are warned against bathing in the river and also washing of clothes or taking pictures at the water’s edge. Fishing in the river is strictly prohibited for now.

At Kakayam dam, where the Kuttiyadi hydroelectric project is located, the reservoir levels rose drastically from incessant rains and inflow from the risen Banasura Sagar,river and authorities opened the dam shutters by 12:45 last midnight. Following this, the KSEB authorities warned residents along Kariyathipuzha and Kuttiyadi rivers for heightened alert
