Kalpetta: Death toll from multiple landslides in Wayanad Tuesday climbed to 110. Of the total bodies recovered, sixteen were found floating in Malappuram’s Chaliar river. Fatality numbers are expected to rise. Meanwhile, identities to 44 bodies were confirmed.
The first landslide struck at 2 am followed by another at 4:10 am. Following the landslides, river became split, flowing in two different directions, flooding homes in areas that least expected the inundation. Around 3,069 people have shifted to camps opened at various locations.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the disaster as one of the worst landslides to strike the State in recent history. Contributions to Chief Minister Distress Relief Fund are trickling in, after news of the tragedy spread, said CM.
IAF helicopter, that failed to arrive due to weather conditions in the morning, made landings in the evening and ferried several injured people to hospitals outside the difficult terrain.
Churlapara, Velarimala, Mundakayil and Pothukalu are the worst-hit areas. Several are feared trapped in the upended landscape. 63 bodies identified are that of Churamala natives.
