Mepadi:Joint funeral will be held today too for unidentified victims of massive landslides that struck Wayanad on 30 July. The cremations offering all-faith rites will be held at special crematorium erected adjoining Harrison Malayalam Plantation in Puthumala. Eight unidentified bodies were cremated here yesterday.
Meanwhile 71 corpses remain unidentified. This is apart from 132 persons whose only body parts could be retrieved.. The body and partial remains have been handed over to the District Administration.
Although count reported figure higher, only 222 deaths have been officially confirmed so far - 97 men, 88 women and 37 children. Retrieved as just body parts are that 180 persons. Bodies identified by relatives figure to 172. Postmortem has been completed for all 222 bodies and 161 body parts. 135 bodies have been released to relatives desiring private funeral for their kin.
572 victims found from disaster zone were transported to various hospitals. Of these, 97 remain at hospitals of Wayanad Kozhikode, and Malappuram districts.
