Yechury and Karat Offer Homage

Kannur : CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and Polit Bureau member Prakash Karat paid tributes to the red flag-draped beloved leader preparing for his final journey. They reached CPI(M) Kannur District Office of Azhikodan Mandiram and lay floral wreaths beside, bidding farewell to the veteran comrade. Senor party leaders including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan were present beside Kodiyeri’s mortal remains at the time.Also present were Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and Opposition Leader VD Satheesan.

The body  was lifted from ancestral home in Kodiyeri at 11.30 and in a procession thronged by thousands and bystanders waiting for hours for a last glimpse of their beloved leader, set out  for CPI(M) District Office of Azhikodan Mandiram. Non-stop slogans rend the air as did grief of thousands.

Gathering by hundreds of thousands began soon as Kodiyeri’s mortal remains arrived from Chennai’s Apollo in an air ambulance at Kannur airport.  The body was laid day-long on Sunday at Thalassery town hall as people formed serpentine queues to catch a glimpse and pay respects to the departed leader. People had arrived from all over the State overflowing the streets.

After public homage up to 2.30 pm, the  body in a procession featuring prominent leaders including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, MV Govindan, MA Baby, KK Shailaja and others moved toward Payambra, where, amidst tall icons of the Left , the beloved leader shall be laid to rest at Payyambalam beach.

There, Kodiyeri’s  mortal remains shall be cremated laid between memorial tombs of EK Nayanar and former CPI(M) State Secreatary Chadan Govindan, both of who have served as party state secretaries. A memorial tomb for Kodiyeri shall be raised at the site later.
