NEW DELHI : Four ABVP men were taken into custody by police for the violence against students at JNU campus last evening. According to sources, all four are outsiders.

In the wake of violence, the police conducted a flag march in the University campus early morning, a move disrupted by students there. Students raised slogans and demanded that  cops  leave the campus. They called for booking the RSS-linked ABVP attackers, who went on rampage  with swords and hammers on Sunday evening. Angry students pitched up their protests and blocked the cops from carrying through the flag march.

Following yesterday’s violence, students from different universities, including those from Jamia Millia Islamia,  had staged a protest outside Delhi  police headquarters at ITO.   Several professors too joined the protest. The cops tried to forcibly move out  students who  gathered in groups inside the campus.  CPI(M) leaders arrived at the scene and let students be there during the night.

Violence broke out at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday night, when a large group of men wearing masks stormed into the university, attacking students and teachers with rods and hammer. They vandalized property including cars parked in the compound prompting the administration to call in police which conducted a flag march.

At least 18 people, including JNU Student’s Union president Aishe Ghosh, have sustained injuries, including head wounds, in the chaos that lasted nearly two hours. Leaders across the political spectrum condemned the attack.
