Srinagar : Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jammu, a firefight took place between militants and security forces in Sunjawan area of the city on Friday.
Two militants were shot dead while a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawan lost his life and four others sustained injuries during the operation.
" Two AK-47 rifles, satellite phones and some documents were recovered", police said.
Dilbagh Singh, Director General of J& K Police told reporters that the slain militants belonged to Jaish-e-Mohammad militant outfit and they had come on a mission to launch a suicidal attack on some security forces camp.
" This attempt has been foiled", he said.
Singh said that it seemed that the militants had infiltrated recently and were planning to launch an attack close to Prime Minister's visit that would have had implications on his visit also.
Prime Minister Modi is slated to visit Jammu and Kashmir on April 24. It would be his first visit since the BJP government in Centre read down the special constitution provisions of the region and split it into two federally controlled territories.
According to a senior police official, the encounter broke out when security forces launched a search operation in Jallabad Sunjawa near a cantonment area. The operations, according to the official, was launched after the forces received inputs about the movement of militants in the city.
He said that militants attacked a bus carrying the CISF jawans at around 3.30 am.
"The CISF jawans immediately retaliated, forcing the militants to flee. However a one CISF personal was killed and two others suffered injuries", said the official.
He said that in the ensuing gunfight two militants of Pakistani origin and two JKP personal suffered injuries.
All the schools in the vicinity were shut as a precautionary measure.
