NEW DELHI : Thousands of protesters faced off with  police for the third day in the northeastern part of Delhi in Seelampur, last evening. Though lathi charge, tear gas  and  water cannons were deployed, stone throwing and arson continued for hours in the region.

The recent Citizenship Amendment Act sparked protests nationwide, assuming warlike proportions in the north eastern states with peak now shifted from Assam to the national capital.

The entry and exit gates at major metro stations in Delhi have been shut. Additional army reinforcements have moved into positions in the streets. The fresh wave of violence erupted after police stopped protest marchers at Seelampur Chowki late last evening.

Several buses were damaged in stone throwing that followed.  Crowds attacked a police station and  post  in the area, torching several police bikes stationed there.

Metro stations at Welcome Seelampur, Gokulpuri, Jaffrabad, Maujpur remained closed. Bus services have been suspended.  The situation lulled a bit in the late hours. At least 21 persons were injured in the violence.
