NEW DELHI : The Lucknow CBI court will today give its verdict on the alleged conspiracy behind the demolition of Babri Masjid, a 16th century mosque in Ayodhya, - an incident that took place 28 years ago and triggered riots across the country killing 1800 people according to official figures.
The 32 accused on trial include BJP heavyweights LK Advani, Murali Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharati and Kalyan Singh, all of are required to attend the court in-person as per directions of the Special Court judge, Justice SK Yadav. However, owing to treatment for covid, Kalyan Singh and Uma Bharati informed the court of their inability to make it.
There were 48 persons arraigned in the trial originally of whom, 16 have died. Charges in the case comprise conspiracy, inciting hate, making statements that diminish national integration and so forth.
The verdict today comes on the back of Supreme Court directive to wind up the case latest by 30th September. Incidentally, there exists a Supreme Court ruling stating that conspiracy charges would stand against LK Advani.
