Chennai > 22nd Tamil Nadu state conference of the CPI M which was held in Thoothukudi concluded on Tuesday. Senior state CPI M leader and former MLA K Balakrishnan was elected as the party's Tamil Nadu State Secretary.
On the concluding day of the party's three-day state conference, 81 member State Committee was elected and the newly elected members of the state committee unanimously elected K Balakrishnan as its new Tamil Nadu Secretary. He will be succeeding G Ramakrishnan. The state secretariat comprising of 15 members was also elected at the conference.
K Balakrishnan joined CPI M in 1970 as a student and rose through the party ranks. He was active in various struggles for farmers' and workers' rights. He was forced to live 'underground' during the Emergency. He had represented Chidambaram as MLA during 2011-16.
Meanwhile, several persons including a five-year-old boy were injured in an assault by the police at the ‘Red Volunteers March’ here on Tuesday. The march was flagged off by CPI M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury from the public meeting venue on the outskirts of Thoothukudi.

After the police attack, CPI M cadres staged a protest on Annanagar main road here. Again police resorted to brutal attack on CPI M volunteers who were protesting against the ill-treatment by the Police. Four persons including five-year-old Akilesh, son of a state SFI functionary from Tirupur, and three other party cadres were injured. Senior leaders of the party intervened to pacify the agitated party volunteers and called off the road blockade.
