New Delhi  Both Houses of the Parliament drew to a standstill following uproar on ongoing arson, rapes and violence in Manipur. The Lok Sabha has been adjourned till 12 at noon and Rajya Sabha up to 2 pm.

Opposition Party members in both Houses protested demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi make a statement on Manipur in the Parliament. They insisted that no proceedings shall be allowed if there’s  no statement forthcoming from the PM. The Opposition, including Left MPs had submitted Urgent Notice seeking  discussion on Manipur violence in the Parliament.

Meanwhile, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah said he will make a statement in the Parliament on Manipur riots today. Union Minster  Prahlad Joshi said the government was ready for discussions on Manipur issue, adding that leaders including the Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has had offered explanation.

It was more than  two months into the Manipur riots that the Prime Minister made a statement on the issue outside the Parliament. Modi appears unwilling to face it up in the House. Yesterday, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury criticised Modi for taking 75 days to respond to Manipur riots. Why did the Prime Minister not speak up for this long?, he asked.
