CAA Protests Take Bloody Turn; 6 Killed in Gunfire in UP, Scores Injured

LUCKNOW : At least six people have been killed in shootouts after Friday prayers at several places in Uttar Pradesh. The violence, the deadlies  since demonstrations began against Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019,  left dozens of people injured and around 660 people including minors have been taken into police custody as part of “preventive action”.

 According to sources, at least 38 policemen have been injured at different places of arson. Violent protests were reported mainly from 12 districts including Firozahad, Muzaffarnagar, Bulandshahr and Bahraich.

The deceased were identified as Aftab Alam(23), Bilal(24)) in Sambhal, Anal(21)  and Suleman(35) in Bijnor. The others are yet to be identified.

 On Thrusday a 25-year-old man was killed in police firing during a  protest in Old Lucknow area, while two others died of “bullet injuries” in Karnataka’s Mangaluru.

Internet services have been jammed in several districts including Bulandshaahar, Sambal, Lucknow, Kanpur, Bijnor, Firozabad and Muzaffarnagar.

Friday also saw major protests in Delhi, with thousands gathering outside the country’s oldest mosque, the Jama Masjid where . several protesters were bleeding from head wounds as demonstrations intensified.

In Maharashtra, protesters in large numbers hit the streets Beed, Parbhani, Nanded and Hingoli districts..

In Assam, protestors took to street wearing tradition ‘gamosas’ around their heads and shouting slogans against CAA.

Karnataka’s Mangaluru remained inaccessible to outsiders a day after two were killed  in police firing on Thursday.

Meanwhile the Karnataka High Court slammed the state for arbitrarily imposing Section 144 in Bengaluru to deny permission to protest while the Information and Broadcasting Ministry has issued an advisory asking news channels to refrain from broadcasting contents ‘likely to instigate violence or promote anti-national attitudes”.
