Newe Delhi : The Central government set up Committee to study proposal on ‘one nation, one election’. The decision comes close on heels of reports suggesting legislation on “One Nation, One Election” would be passed in special session of Parliament slated from 18 - 22 September.
The Committee would be headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind. Two retired judges too are on the Committee, though this is not formally confirmed yet. BJP has been advancing the idea of one election to Lok Sabha and State Legislatures for a while now. However a special parliamentary session toward this comes as a surprise.
The special sessions will last five days. The Centre argues that single election would mean huge savings for the public exchequer and serve to prevent interruptions to development projects.

BJP’s manifesto during 2014 elections too liss the “One Nation, One Election” idea. In January of 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi aired the idea at a public event. He reiterated the proposition at Chief Ministers’ conference held as part of NITI Aayog the same year. Modi repeated the notion several times after his re-election in 2019.
