Citizenship Amendment : Protests Continue, Marches to Govt. Offices in Assam

NEW DELHI : Violent protests against the controversial Citizenship Act continues to rage across northeastern states of Assam, Mghalaya, West Bengal and Delhi. 

In Assam, amid reports of continued violence,, the All Assam Students Union is set to hold marches to govt offices across the state. Also  the demonstrations have been planned for Sunday which will see participation from the film fraternity including actors.

In Assam, the amended Act conferring citizenship based on an individual’s religious identity, has created deep divisions within the state administration too.

Until Friday eveninging the state reported several violent confrontations  between police and crowds at several places for four days. However according to latest reports,  internet and mobile services suspended 3 days ago, would be restored  shortly.  Also petrol pumps and other utilities in the state will begin to function.

Meanwhile, protest against the Citizenship Act is beginning to grip West Bengal.  Mobs resorted to arson at  railway stations in the state. In Murshidabad's Beldanga, protesters moving by the  railway station  suddenly turned to its buildings lighted fire inside. Employees who tried to intervene were beaten up by the protesters.  Rail men suffered serious injuries in the attack, a senior security official told news reporters.

Following the incident, rail services in Murshidabad district were disrupted. Protesters also blocked tracks, damaged trains and vandalized station premises in the rregion. A locomotive  pilot too was o injured in the attack.

Calcutta also witnessed similar scenes. In Midnapur, protesters attacked a vehicle carrying BJP’s state  general secretary Sayanthanbabu. He was rescued by police who rushed to the spot.
