Coimbatore Car Blast Likely A Suicide Bombing Gone Wrong

Coimbatore : The car blast that occurred in Coimbatore’s Kottaimedu increasingly appears to have been a massive suicide blast that failed to take off at intended levels owing to lack of training.

 According to the suspects in custody, the gang had elaborately planned for suicide bombings targeting temples that would result in significant damage to lives and property.

The deceased Jameesha Mubin and two accomplices at the blast scene had surveilled  three temples for intended blasts, namely the Sangameswarar temple where the blast went off, Mundi Vinayaka Aman temple and Konni Aman. The two others in the gang other than Mubin are : Mohammad Khan and Azhar Khan, who remain in NIA custody. According to the accused, the trio  had purchased LPG cylinders used in the blast from an agency in Gandhi park. A massive blast was expected to enuse, however thier lack of training fused it into low key explosion, the accused told NIA.

Backdrop : The car explosion took plce outside Sangmeswar temple in Kottaimedu in the dawn of  23rd October. The blast was initially considered an accident until forensic examination of the debris revealed terror tools like vehicle nails, marbles low intensive explosives like potassium  nitrate, aluminum powder, charcoal sulphur etc.  Jameesha Mubin,nt, a young engineering graduate, was at the wheel and died in the blast.

There are five arrested so far in the case – Mohammad Dhaiha, Mohammad Azharudheen, Mohammad Riyaz, Feroz Ismail and Mhammad Navaz Ismail, all of who are Coimbatore natives.
