New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Monday handed a four-month jail term and Rs 2000 in fine to fugitive liquor baron Vijaya Mallya. The sentencing comes on finding Mallya guilty of disbursing $ 4 million to his children in violation of standing court order. Today’s verdict also requires Mallya to return the said money together with interest within four weeks.
Mallya is guilty of loan default to the tune of over Rs 9,000 crores relating to his defunct Kingfisher Airlines. He is currently residing in UK after bailing himself on an extradition warrant executed by Scotland Yard.
The case was deferred several times to allow Mallya present his defence. That failing, today’s ruling came ex parte. The apex court Bench comprised Justices UU Lalit and Ravindra Bhatt, PS Narisimha.
