No Court Heaing of Petitions Yet; Preparations On To Implement CAA Through Backdoor: Yechury

New Delhi:  CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury marked protest over Centre’s attempt to implement CAA - the draconian law that sparked wide protest across the country. The government notification soliciting applications for citizenship has been published even before formulating legal framework for the procedure, said Yechury. Also, the Supreme Court is yet to hear the petitions questioning constitutionality of that law and the hearings are due to commence soon. The Centre should stop its backdoor attempt to implement the Citizenship’s Act, said Yechury.

Context: The Centre recently published notification inviting applications from non-Muslims for the country’s.  citizenship.  Applications were sought from refugees living in 13 districts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Haryana combined, who might have returned from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. And, eligible to apply are refugees belonging to religious denominations of : Sikh, Jain, Parsi and Christian.
