The politician has been charged under both Indian Penal Code and POCSO Act where would be punished as a public servant committing penetrative sexual assault against child. The crime attracts a maximum punishment of life imprisonment.
Arguments on quantum sentencing will take place on Wednesday.
District Judge Dharmesh Sharma, acquitted the co-accused Shashi Singh of all charges. Incidentally, Shashi fell unconscious as soon the judge pronounced Sengar guilty.
The court noted that Sengar initiated several criminal cases against the victim’s family, after she wrote to Chief minister Yogi Adityanath seeking justice. These actions, the court noted, bore “imprints of Sengar”.
The then 17-year-old girl was kidnapped and raped by Sengar in 2017. Both Sengar and his assistant Singh were charged of criminal conspiracy during the trial.
The proceedings of the high profile case was held in-camera. The Supreme Court had transferred the case from UP’s Unnao to Delhi. earlier
