Covid 19 : Yechury Calls For Urgent Measures To Prevent Countrywide Surge In 3rd Phase

Web Desk‌Updated: Tuesday Mar 17, 2020

NEW DELHI : CPI(M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury called up on  Centre to shift to urgent measures in order to prevent Covid-19 from overwhelming communities countrywide. ICMR(Indican Council of Medical Research) has informed  how next 30 days would be  critical to ongoing crisis.. The govt should envisage policies and identify funding sources in  this time,  Yechury said at the CPI(M) Politburo meeting held Monday.

India falls behind other countries in terms of adequate diagnostic centres  Greater number of facilities should be put up to handle cases on war footing so it becomes possible to promptly examine symptomatic individuals and administer later course of action without delay, Yechury said. Health systems are sparse in rural areas, he reminded.

Asking home quarantined persons to abstain from interacting with other individuals is  not practical in our society.  In several homes, it would not be possible to spare a room exclusively for one person. The situation thus calls for expanding public health centres for the purpose on urgent basis.

The Centre should aid States to arrange for basic facilities. The Budget share for healthcare should be raised. It is deplorable that the Centre  made changes to its earlier notification allowing State governments to utilise disaster relief fund in order to compensate families of those who succumb to the virus and  provide for treatment of Covid patients. The Centre should recall this decision, demanded Yechury.
