Cyclone Yaas To Leave Odisha Coast Today; Heavy Rainfall and High Winds of 140 Kmph

New Delhi ; Yaas cyclone formed in Bay of Bengal made landfall in Odisha 9 m this morning with high winds gusting between 130 - 140 km per hour. West Bengal and Odisha is experiencing heavy downpours. The cyclonic winds are predicted to wreck maximum devastation in Odisha districts of Bhadrak and Balsor. Airports have been shuttered and power supply turned off in the state. Coastal regions are witnessing heavy sea erosion. Waves as high as 3 meters are predicted for the region.

Over 11 lakh people have been evacuated to safer grounds - 9 lakhs in West Bengal and 2 lakh in Odisha. Jharkhand is put on high alert.

IMD has forecast likely landslides Wednesday morning in Dharma harbour in Odishan’s Bhadrak. Most evacuees are residents from this region.

115 National Disaster Management teams have been deployed at three locations in Odisha. The ongoing cyclone will trigger heavy rains in several states and hospitals have been issued alert for advance preparedness for the weather onslaughts, given the already prevailing Covid conditions.
