New Delhi : Delhi Police arrested five more persons in connection with 3 student deaths due to flooding of basement in a IAS coaching centre named Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Old Rajinder Nagar. The accused include a driver who knocked off the basement gates causing water to gush into the basement leading to tragic consequences.
“Whoever is at fault will not be spared,” said DCP M Harshavardhan. Those arrested today include four owners of spaces in the basement and a vehicle driver. The Police also sent notice to Municipal Corporation of Delhi(MCD)
Meanwhile the Delhi Municipal Corporation Commissioner terminated the local Junior Engineer(JE) and suspended Asst. Engineer(AE) - the first significant action after protests over the deaths. Additionally, the Corporation sealed off 13 basements in the Old Rajinder Nagar that illegaly functions as coaching centres. Most often the basements are declared as parking or stocking spaces but in some, they are misused for commercial activities, a MCD official said.
The tragedy: The accused driver with his vehicle waded through rainwater causing water flow to become intense and knockdown the basement door. There were 20 – 25 students in the classrooms at the time and managed to come out safely from the sudden flooding. However tragically, 3 students – two females and a male – died stranded inside the library portion owing to failed single biometric entry and exit points.
