New Delhi : A group of residents from a coronavirus containment zone in Delhi attacked policemen and civil volunteers following an argument over barricades placed around the area. A few people suffered minor injuries in the incident that took place yesterday noon.
According to reports, when the police and volunteers arrived at SZ Block the zone to distribute food and supplies, some residents demanded that barricades be removed citing the several relaxations following Centre’s announcement early this month. Soon the face-off turned physical and police resorted to minor force to hold the people back.
Incidentally, there have been other incidents of similar nature reported where essential service workers, doctors, police or health workers have faced hostilities while serving amid pandemic.
The WZ block of the area was declared a containment zone after 10 virus cases were reported there.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had warned stringent action against those harassing essential workers or others on the frontline of the combat against virus.
Delhi, one of the worst-hit regions of the country, has reported close to 60,000 Covid-19 cases so far and death tally figures at 2,175.
