Delhi Riots : Lawyers' Union Slams Charging Students With UAPA

Press ReleaseUpdated: Tuesday May 5, 2020

AILU condemns the action of the Central government and the Police/NIA registering FIRs against students and activists invoking Section 124 A  of lPC  and Provisions of UAPA and arresting them without any legal basis; some are behind the bars.

It's highly objectionable and absolutely irrational and unjust to put blame of Delhi riots on anti CAA, NRC &NPR protesters. It's not only to protect actual culprits but also to manufacture consent andlegitimise the jingoistic hindutva nationalism;part of  consistant and persistent fascistic policy of the regime   to tramp down dissent and deny right to freedom of expression and liberty to people.

It's shocking that they deemed this lockdown period ,when entire Nation is fighting Covid-19 , as the appropriate time to venture for this sort of undemocratic and oppressive action, where as despite specific written complaints against hindu tua leaders, including  Union Minister, MLA etc for their vitriolic hate speeches they refused to register FIRs even where there was strong observations by the Honourable High Court of Delhi on tangible materials.

Disaster Management Act or Epidemic Diseases Act cannot and should not be a shield or ruse to declare holidays for the precious fundamental rights .

AILU demands immediate withdrawal of FIRs registered against innocent students and activists- anti  CAA ,NCR & NPR protesters invoking Section 124 A of IPC and provisions of UAPA and release them forthwith
