DU Admission Process Troubles Keralites; Students Meet CM

New Delhi > Different issues huzzled students from Kerala state board as admission in First cut-off ended on Thursday in Delhi University (DU). Students met Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday at Kerala House and requested the government’s interference in the issue. CM assured to take necessary actions after discussing the issue with education minister as he reaches Kerala. The seemingly deliberate discriminations are suspected to be part of a larger plot to keep away Keralites from top universities.

In the first two days of cut off, Continuous Evaluation mark (CE) was not considered and admission was denied on the basis of not producing provisional certificate along with original certificate.

In DU admission to 55000 under graduate seats is based on the marks scored in plus two levels. The marks scored for Continuous Evaluation (CE) was not considered in most colleges including Zakir Husain Delhi College, Hindu college and Ramjas college in the first two days of admission. Though there are some examples in the prospectus regarding the addition of CE marks, there is no clear statement about how to include it. This leads to the avoidance of the CE marks and thereby to the significant decrease in the overall percentage marks of many students. More than thirty students faced the problem indifferent colleges like Zakir, Hindu and Miranda House. Very few could manage to take admission in other colleges were CE mark was taken.

"The issues were laid before the university officials, but even after continuous requests, they were not ready to respond officially to college. It is only on the last day that we were able to get a letter from the Dean Office so that the students were able to take admission “said Maaroof, a UG student here and the President of Mythri .

Along with this, colleges like Ramjas, Hindu were asking for provisional certificates from Malayali students. Kerala state board doesn't provide provisional certificates to its students. "Provisional certificate is a temporary certificate issued to ensure that the students don't suffer till the original certificate is issued. The provisional certificate is not valid once the original certificate is issued by the concerned institute or government department. It is certainly against the university rule and human logic to deny admission citing the lack of provisional certificate once the candidate produces original certificate", said Abdullah Abdul Hameed, an assistant professor of DU.

Not less than 20 students were asked to submit provisional certificates in the first day in different colleges. After continue arguments with officials. Most of them could gain admission as they gave an undertaking letter stating that provisional certificate will be produced within 10 days or else the university can cancel their admission.

The issue was laid before the education department of Kerala and a clarification was sent to University. So in the last day students without provisional certificate were able to take admission in colleges like Ramjas after this. Also from the university office it was informed that the students who gave undertaking do not need to produce provisional certificates.

SFI Delhi State committee and Mythri, association of Malayali students in DU, in two separate meetings, met Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday at Kerala House. Memorandum was also submitted to CM.  The issues related to the difficulties faced by students from Kerala during admission were communicated to Chief Minister. He said that he will consider the matter seriously and will discuss the issues with education minister as he reaches Kerala.

There are also allegations that the administration is deliberately trying to discriminate the students from southern part of the country.”Students from Kerala, especially those from state board have to face many difficulties during admission process. Most of them are unnecessary. Students and even parents from Kerala have to face very harsh behavior from officials also”, said Ima VR, student of Delhi University and the convenor of KSSP Yuvasamithy Delhi.

More than 500 students from Kerala are currently pursuing education in Delhi University for various courses and it increases year after year. So, these kinds of issues have to be resolved for the end of the plight of students .
